Poetry Month

Did you know April is Poetry Month? Miss Mitchell and Miss April came up with a "Poet Tree" for us to display all of our poetry! Each of us wrote at least one poem to put on our poet tree. We decorated the tree so it would tie in to our "Save the Earth" theme, with cut-outs of birds, flowers, and clouds.

Spring flowers

Everyone loves seeing all of the flowers bloom in springtime. SMS is no different. Our students love flowers so much that we are making them! With coffee filters, markers, and a pipe cleaner, we have some beautiful flowers blossoming in B166! We may even use these flowers for a May Day activity.

First, we colored the coffee filters with markers.

 

Then, we ran them under water so the colors would run together.

Next, we unfolded the coffee filters and set them out to dry.

Then, we folded the coffee filters, assembled them with pipe cleaners, and fluffed them up a bit.

Finally, we had beautiful flowers to share with our friends.

Track and Field

Today we started training for the track and field events for Special Olympics. We will be competing at Wi Hi on May 26. We will be doing a softball/tennis ball throw and running short distances. We have all participated in soccer and basketball Special Olympics, but this will be our first time with track and field.

HOP!

Today was our field trip to the movies to see "Hop." Our trip was made possible thanks to Ms. Mitchell, Mrs. Eskridge, Mr. Elzey, and Mrs. Emerick at McDonald's.

We all had lunch at McDonald's before the movie. Some members of the A-team came along with Mr. Elzey, and a few students from Mr. Wallace's and Mr. Smith's class joined us too.

Ms. Mitchell got us our very own private showing of the movie! We had the entire movie theater to ourselves.   Everyone had a blast!

Here comes Peter Cottontail!

We started our day off with an easter egg hunt in the front lobby. Peter Cottontail left us each a couple of eggs with little treats inside! Searching for the eggs got us ready for our field trip to see "Hop" at the movies!

The results are in!

Our hard-boiled eggs soaked in different liquids overnight. We checked our eggs this afternoon to see the damage that soda, iced tea, and sugar can do to our teeth. We couldn't believe the results!

This experiment showed us just how important it is to brush our teeth at least twice a day! When we used the toothpaste on the stained eggs, they looked much cleaner. We promise we will try to practice egg-cellent dental hygiene!

We wanted to see the effects that different things have on our teeth. We used hard-boiled eggs to represent our teeth, because we observed that the eggs are white and have a hard surface, just like our teeth. Then we each got a cup and poured a liquid into it; either water, sugar water, soda, or iced tea. The eggs are going to sit in those liquids overnight.





 

Each of us made a hypothesis. Some of us thought the egg would crack. Others thought it would disappear! And a couple thought the egg would change colors.

We can't wait to see the results!
