Salisbury Fire Department Visit

Today we had firefighters from the Salisbury Fire Department visit us at SMS to talk about fire safety. Each of us asked the firefighters a question about their jobs. We were so excited that Briele's mom was one of the firefighters that came to see us!
Briele asking her mom a question

We got to go out to the truck and learn about all of the neat things that are on it.

We also got to climb through to check out the inside of the truck. When we came out of the other side of the truck, we tried on some of their turn-out gear. The jacket was very thick and heavy. The helmets were really heavy, too!

Regis loved wearing the gear!

They put the ladder onto the roof of our school.
Most of us said this was our favorite part of the visit.
After we checked everything out, we got to hear the horn and the siren. It was very loud, but a lot of us loved it! The firefighters came back into our classroom and talked to us about fire safety. They even gave us pamphlets, pencils, and neat erasers shaped like fire hats, fire engines, and fire hydrants. We enjoyed having them and learned a lot about fire safety and the job of a firefighter.

Balloon Fiesta

This week we read about "Balloon Fiesta." It is a huge hot air balloon festival that takes place October 1-9 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We are currently in the process of making replicas of hot air balloons. On Thursday, we will have our very own "Balloon Fiesta" and show off our colorful balloons.

Special Olympics Practice

We have been getting ready for our Special Olympics Soccer Competition that will be taking place in October. Mr. Agoglia has been teaching us how to play, and we practice twice a week. So far, we are all making progress and hope to win medals in the competition.

Terrible Towel

The week of September 12 -16, our news story was about Terrible Towels. We learned that Myron Cope was a sports broadcaster who started selling the Terrible Towels to Steelers fans. Myron wanted to use the money from each of the $7 Terrible Towels in a positive way. He donated the money to the Allegheny Valley School for students with disabilities.

Mrs. Dashiell brought in a real Terrible Towel! We got to wave them like true Steelers fans!

Patriot Day

The week before September 11, we read all about Patriot Day. We learned about the losses that Americans suffered that day. This tragic event united the American people. We learned all about first responders and that they help people during an emergency.

On Patriot Day, we wanted to thank our first responders. Mrs. Grunden's friend is a New York City Firefighter. His company (Truck 20) lost many firefighters on September 11, 2001, so we mailed them letters to thank them for their bravery and strength.

Dress Up Wednesday

Every Wednesday, Salisbury Middle School has Dress Up Wednesday. Check out our turnout for black and white dress up day!

All About Me

During the first week of school, we brought in pictures of ourselves, our families, and our pets. This way our classmates could get to know us better. We saw a lot of really neat pictures and learned so much about our new friends. Then we colored posters to hang up in the hallway that tell about our favorite things. They turned out great!

Special Olympics: Track & Field

Today we participated in track and field events for Special Olympics at Wi Hi. We have been training with Mr. Spangler at least once a week all spring. He has been teaching us how to do our very best at running/walking, throwing, and jumping. He has even shown us how to improve those skills. Even though it was a really hot day, there was a nice breeze to keep us cool. We had so much fun, we didn't even notice how hot it was! We all participated in 3 events, and each of us won 3 medals!!
